As another reviewer said, I don't usually read zombie stories. I found the start of this book on the SB forums, and took a glance at it. The first paragraph got my attention, before, I realized it was a zombie story. When it became clear what the stories protagonists actually were, I said what the heck and kept reading. I am happy I did. It is written from the viewpoint of a southern gal who isn't Annie Oakley or Wonder Woman. Just a simple lady who finds herself, family and friends in a horrible situation. There are no long lists of weapons, exotic or otherwise, no blow by blow firefights, where average people become Navy Seals or Army Rangers raining down death from above. What it IS, is common folks caught up in a mind bending, soul wrenching, impossible, world gone mad. I found it a good solid read and quite entertaining. I read the book in it's rough draft stage to the end. Even though I read it for free I have purchase a copy on Amazon. The author deserves that small reward and much more for freely entertaining the members of the SB site. Because of the restrictions placed on authors from Amazon and other E Book publishers, the story has since been removed, but the memory lingers on with all those who read it there.Tags : Not Dead in the Heart of Dixie [R M Kralik] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This was a pretty good story, still it had time line issues (how much got done in the time spent) and some other typical things of the genre, The author seems to think if you live north of the Mason Dixon Line you are incapable of doing anything but be a burden on the 'gentle upstanding southern folk'. Other than that it's a pretty good read.
This book was well written and had me laughing and crying and cussing. The story pulls you in hard without even trying, which is a feat unto itself since it is written in journal style. I am looking forward to the second book and will buy it as soon as I see it. Read it and judge for yourself.
I found part 2 on a site that only had a few chapters. I found it interesting so I came to and bought the first book. I finished it and look forward to the second book being available for my kindle.
Loved this book. I don't usually read books written in diary format but this was wonderful. I liked Robin a lot, probably because I identified with her age, loyalty to family, nurturing (get everyone fed!), a little selfish (aren't we all), and she hasn't always finished her projects. I only wish they had at least burned one meal or it didn't taste great. I liked all of the characters. This is the second time I have read this book in the last couple of years. I highly recommend it.
I admit I didn't finish this. The author has a nice writing style. Its simple and fun to read but the story .. well, iv never seen so much looting in a story and Iv never seen such a upbeat apocalypse. I stopped reading when some guy said..'that was my son in law' then his wife cried , then the men cracked a joke about concrete with the dead husband lying there. This was odd. I kept wondering when it was going to change, but I gave up on the book. For quite some time most of the chapters began with the menu, then they went looting. Idk I still don't quite get this story. feel kinda bad about saying so
Martin's style to do this in a diary format really worked. I admit, I was doubtful before I read it but it really brought the intensity of the families situation and their personalities so much more up close and believable. Also, their were a lot of people introduced into the story and normally I can't keep up but with the diary format she brought all of them right into your heart. This was a great, great story and I REALLY hope their will be a second book. I would even pay more for it. This book would be one of the top five out of the hundred plus I've read in this genre. A MUST READ!! Highly recommend!
I read a lot of survival genre fiction as well as books on prepping/survival/self reliance. To my way of thinking a good survival book includes all aspects of being prepared.
The folks at Kapper Hill, as portrayed in the journal of Robin Kapper, are able to adapt when a pandemic hits the world creating zombies and the opportunity for various factions to attempt to take over the United States after the government falls. The North Vietnamese, Chinese, and various "fake" military agencies work against the survivors of the pandemic, creating more havoc, death and destruction than most people could ever prepare for.
Robin, her husband Mick, their family and extended family, friends and others work together to build a compound for safety and self sufficiency. The characters in the book have a broad base of knowledge, many are ex-military and their skills are a necessary support for the people who are medically knowledgeable or capable of organization, gardening, animal husbandry, etc; Most of the crew are skilled and those that aren't, including youngsters of 11 and 12, are quickly taught in the areas they excel in. Everyone pitches in and Kapper Hill grows in strength, supplies and knowledge.
None of it comes without a price, just as Americans first freed this country from tyranny, they're called to fight again in this new series by R.M. Kralik.
Enjoyable and the kind of book that keeps you up late at night, assuring yourself you're only going to finish one last chapter before turning in for the night...
