Voices Over Troubled Water is an inspirational story about overcoming adversity with the love of his family. The tale begins with the author contemplating his life, past, present and future as he had just finished a tour in Vietnam, with a new wife and a baby on the way and though he had gotten his old job back, things were certainly not what he had hoped or planned. Where he is contemplating his life brings up memories of a traumatic event that happened in March of 1958, on a cold rainy night, over the 59th Street Bridge (over Troubled Water) and how that one event shaped his life forever. As the story goes on, the song by Simon & Garfunkel takes shape throughout the story.

The author describes growing up in a poor Italian American neighborhood in Brooklyn in the 1960’s with his younger siblings and family next door. He describes a tough life, but a life full of family, good times and most important, the love he felt. He had good friends growing up in the neighborhood, cousins next door and one special cousin who was like a brother to him growing up; all continuing to shape the life of a young boy with heart-breaking and humorous stories intertwined.

The author goes on to describe the list of characters that shaped his life, though he didn’t know, until he was an adult, just how much these people would really impact his life. These people included family, teachers and an occasional thug, with a few twists that leave you smiling and some twists leaving you with a lump in your throat or a clenched fist.

As the author grows into an adult the tale begins to weave through meeting the love of his life and his tour in Vietnam on the USS America, both happening almost simultaneously. All the while, the voices over troubled water kept speaking to him.

The story brings the life of a young man full circle, involving betrayal, love, patriotism, family bond, friendships, death and forgiveness.

At 174 pages, this is a short book with a big impact and totally worth the read.

Voices Over Troubled Water is a tale that will hold you riveted from page one. It is a poignant story about loss and the redemptive power of love, forgiveness, and perseverance.

In this inspirational, first person narrative, Rosato demonstrates that we should not be victims of the tribulations we go through. Voices Over Troubled Waters
by Joe Rosato

There are many memoirs out there, but only a few that really grab you.  Occasionally, there are books written by authors, such as Pete Hamill (A Drinking Life),  Tobias Wolff (This Boy's Life), pieces and columns by Jimmy Breslin, and Pete Dexter's articles and autobiographical novels.  Let's not forget Phillip Roth and William Styron (Visible Darkness).

Joe Rosato's  Voices Over Troubled Waters is of that genre.  In fact, from the psychological perspective it even surpasses some of the more famous authors.  The reason being is that most of the book is about a searing memory of Joe's life experience, which not only gives the book and the author total credibility but also admiration from the reader for his courage to bare his soul and examine the early devastation of his family life.

Joe has had  very, very hard beginnings and situations which would have doomed and  destroyed lesser men.  He was abandoned in his middle childhood by both parents.  If he would not have been taken-in by his maternal grandmother and also having had supportive relatives in his life, for all practical purposes  Joe could or would have been an orphan.  In some ways he still was one but he carried on.  Given his own resiliency and personality he might have made it on his own but certainly not at age nine or ten.  The major factor in his life was the presence and the love of his grandmother, who became his caregiver and nurturer.  Not only did she love Joe, she cherished him.

While others in such situations come out shattered, suffering from the after-effects of the rejection and internalizing negative feelings and attacks on their sense of self and worth, Joe seemed to be able to make such catastrophic adjustments with the help and love of his grandmother and support of other relatives.
Joe emerged from these life-shattering experiences and became a well adjusted faithful and supportive husband, father, career professional, and a dedicated and proud military veteran from the Vietnam War.

The reader certainly may ponders over these developments, but the answers are clear.  There are three psychological principles at play here.  One is that most children are resilient.  The second is that if there are no parents present then what all children in such situations need is another adult in their lives.  That adult must be both a loving and a good person.  His grandmother certainly met the criteria and thus saved Joe's life.  He might have made it on his own but he would not be the person that he is today. Third, and last, is that as negative as it may be, children do withstand some abuse, including physical. Its the indifference and the withdrawal of love that are more damaging for it kills the soul.

This book should used as a supplement in both psychology and social work coursework, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Given the deterioration and decline in our culture , family, and society, Joe stands as an inspiration and a role-model.

Life rolled snake-eyes at him with the dice but Joe survived and did it with grace and a class act.  Where he found his values is hard to fathom given that both parents were worthless as parents but Joe survived in spite of them. The mother certainly had issues that go beyond mere neglect . I hesitate to do a blind psychological analysis with limited information, but is deeper psychopathology was present then she could be viewed as a victim rather than just a villain.

Finally, the author bared his soul and did not flinch.  The die were cast early in the game and mostly anyone else  would have been doomed.  Joe not only survived but he thrived.  Mental health experts say that stuff tends to repeat itself in families and in subsequent generations.  The bad stuff gets incorporated by the new and is the passed on to their own children that follow.

I am certain that Joe broke that chain.  It's not a shot in the dark to assume with a high degree of certainty that Joe was a loving and a faithful husband, a good father, great friend, and a respected and successful business professional.

This is also a book by a Vietnam War Veteran who served his country well and proudly during a difficult war. He lends credence to the notion that most Vietnam veterans served their country honorably and led productive and honorable lives once back in the civilian world.  In this area, I know many guys like Joe, who negate the negative stereotypes fostered by our culture, media, and the anti-war left in the 1960's.

For Joe, serving in the military was not a rite of passage or a coming-of-age story.  He already had had his crucible early in life.  He had passed a crucial test of survival so the military may not have been a big deal for him from that perspective.  Nevertheless, it did contribute to his maturity, being level-headed, and for loving the nation which he served. These values are to be cherished.

With admiration and great respect, this one's for you Joe,
