A Lion's Pride is Alyssa Rae's debut novel and it shows Rae to be a writer of great promise in the YA genre. If you like a good story with characters you can understand and root for, then this is a story you will enjoy. While many readers may not have much experience with small towns and the rivalries that can spring up between biker gangs, Rae's portrayal of the young-heroine caught in the middle of this dangerous feud between rival gangs is riveting. In the end this is a simple story about evil and good, and the characters caught up and fighting for survival in this battle of opposing primal forces, is why we care.

When two rival motorcycle clubs exist in the same area, it does seem very much like two competing prides of lions in a life-or-death struggle over territory. The winner survives and the loser will not. The protagonist in this story is a young-woman named Alex Murphy who is the daughter of the leader of one of the motorcycle gangs. The story begins after her parent's murder when the rival motorcycle gang makes the decision to kidnap Alex. Alex is a beautiful and strong young-woman in a difficult situation and as a reader I was immediately drawn into her predicament by the threat she faced.

The book is one that almost any age of reader can enjoy and it is definitely a story that will keep you engaged and turning the page so you can find out what happens next. The author, Alyssa Rae, has a knack for what I call direct and concise narrative. She is able to convey this young-woman's story in a simple and straightforward way, and because of her skill as a writer, you are carried along and lose yourself in the story.

One of my joys as a reader is to find new authors that are just becoming known. Alyssa Rae is certainly an emerging writer to watch.

Alyssa Rae's debut novel "A Lion's Pride" had my complete attention from the very first sentence of the prologue. This is a tried-and-true idea for a book where it's a 'good vs. bad' storyline and Alyssa has done an incredible accomplishment of immediately drawing the reader in and not letting them go until the very last word of the epilogue. Every detail and each event pulls you in further and I found myself completely engrossed in every word. With such a unique writing style, I felt as if I were right there watching the events unfold. She is a truly talented author and I know she is going to have an amazing career. I am looking forward to Alyssa Rae's future works because this one absolutely delivered in every way possible.

It starts menacingly enough--the main character seemingly in mortal danger--then deftly proceeds to reel you into its narrative. It's about a local town's motorcycle club (the Fu Lions) and its members' efforts in keeping their town free from vice, while a rival bike club, The Reaper's Sons, use money and drugs to expand their influence. At the center of it all is the young, beautiful gutsy heroine named Alex Murphy, survivor of a tragic murder that took away the lives of her parents, direct descendant of the gentlemen who founded the Fu Lions in the first place. Her beauty and the fact that she's a young woman in a milieu dominated and run by men serve as a focal point in the struggle to keep the integrity of her town--and the legacy of her grandfather's club--intact.

That's about the gist of the book's story, but along the way, as you turn the pages obsessively to find out what happens next, you meet a number of characters that are at turns endearing, repugnant, interesting, and lovable. Moreover, Alyssa Rae's language is easy and unpretentious--she tells it as it is without burdening the narrative with too much complexity. `A Lion's Pride' is a breezy literary delight, tight and tense in just the right places, but an immensely entertaining read nevertheless. I give it the five stars it deserves.

A good book. Well written. A great read if interested in suspenseful situations with a bit of a love story intertwined. Despite being a shorter book, it was an easy read that took you on an adventure the whole time.
Alyssa Rae writes in a clear narrative that while uncomplicated serves her story well, and while it can be said that the story of A Lion's Pride is a black and white tale of good and evil, every aspect of her writing serves that end. In other words, it works, and it's just a matter of taste if a reader doesn't like it. I happened to be a reader that enjoys a story where good is good and evil is evil. Not that this story is without complications or characters that are multi-dimensional.

The story is about two biker clubs, one the Fu-Lions, the good guys, and the other the Reaper's Sons, the bad guys who deal drugs and take over towns. The story centers around Alex who is the daughter of the deceased leader of the Fu-Lions club, and the Reaper's want to kidnap her. That's the basics. Characters like Jason, who while a good guy isn't above smacking around someone who desperately needs it, lends the story depth and credibility.

So it's a novel where suspension of disbelief comes easily in a black and white world, and that's a trick not so easy to pull off.
