SPOILER ALERT: Throughout most of the book, I was all set to give "Berried Alive" a 3 star rating. As usual, the mystery seemed rather obvious. Except it wasn't. For the first time, Ms. Kingsbury threw me for a loop and I was completely surprised as to the killer's identity. I thought for certain Annie Adelaide would be the killer. The real culprit never even entered my mind.

Another drawback to this entry was the fact Elizabeth seemed different somehow. Maybe because she was so preoccupied with herself. I didn't get the same feeling of concern for her tenants and others as I have in previous books. She annoyed me a bit in this one. The secondary characters, however, were all spot on. And I do love the intense, heartbreaking interplay between Elizabeth and Earl.

Then the ending came, fast and furious, really packing a punch and pushing up the rating. My goodness, I did not see that coming! What will happen now? And will Earl and Sam ever return? I can't believe Ms. Kingsbury is going to end the relationships here, but you never know. I can't wait to read the next one and find out what happens from here.

I also loved the scene where Nellie Smith got the best of Rita Crumm. Ha ha! Too bad Elizabeth wasn't around to enjoy the moment.

Berried Alive A Manor House Mystery Kate Kingsbury 9781587247910 Books Reviews

Ditto
Very difficult to review as we are totally biased. We love Kate Kingsbury & read all her series. You will enjoy this story very much - we loved it!
I do enjoy hr stories. the murder(s) are a side issue. Good character presentation. Other suspenseful items continue. The ghost? This perpetrator was a real surprise.
This series as well as her Pennyfoot Hotel series is (and I hate this word) awesome. I have never read a complete series before I found the two of these, now I have read both...you will not be disappointed. It (they) may take place in Edwardian and war time England, but the characters are so 'today'. And, get this. I sent an e-mail to Mrs. Kingsbury, which she actually answered. One of her secrets to success is a much younger husband! She is just a delightful person. She writes good, clean, interesting mysteries. Plus, a bonus she is also writing under another name...but this time romances!
Great cozy mystery series. These are quick reads, great for kindle. Whenever I'm caught waiting in line or whatever I always have it with me. I would highly recommend reading the series in order though. The England WW2 time period is well researched with good character development throughout the series.
Helps to take you away from whatever might be troubling you for a bit!
I love the Manor House series, I actually have the last two that I haven't read yet, so I will have something delightful to look forward to. I do this with the Daisy Dalyrimple, post WWI series as well.
This is set during WWII in a village in England, where all must cope with boisterous Yanks, food rationing and the inevitable murderer in their midst. Lady Elizabeth and Major Monroe's attraction for one another is understated. The villagers, especially the tyrannical Rita Crumm and her womens group are always amusing. I will truly miss this series when the last two books are released.
the story takes place during WW ll in a small English village that has become a USAF base; the mystery involves the death/murder/poisoning of several red-headed USAF pilots; the plot and the solution are well handled. BUT..... the USAF officers are staying at the Manor House and the Lady Of The Manor (who is madly in love with for the Major, even tho he's a married man).is an absolute dorrmat; i wanted to slap her and tell her to wake up! her whole attitude seems much more WWl that WWll - it' as if the whole change in women's role and the slow breakdown of the rigid class system never happened here. . while the mystery is solved at the end of the book, there are several plot lines left dangling - i felt like i was reading a serialization of a larger novel.
